6.13 (unreleased)

  • Camera calibration asks for the camera permission when it starts without it; its description says that it also lets one brightness curve fit whichever camera or the light sensor is the ambient light source
  • A phone lying face down on a surface no longer keeps the screen at the brightness from before it was put down: the proximity sensor doesn't hold brightness while the phone faces down and the light sensor reads 25 lux or less
  • Manual graph edit's Cancel button is now Revert: it shows the current curve again and is available only while the text differs from it
  • Fix: with a Camera read interval over 60 seconds, the camera was read only once after the screen turned on, and shorter intervals were stretched once a minute
  • Fix: with Interactive notification off, Android could close the app a few seconds after it started its service
  • Fix: in dark theme, the buttons of Manual graph edit and the In-app store's Try again button showed dark text on a dark background
  • Fix: confirming the Excluded apps list with OK could freeze the app while the list of installed apps was still loading
  • Fix: Android could report the app as not responding while it saved the widget graph's history
  • Fix: leaving the settings while the Excluded apps list was still loading crashed the app and stopped automatic brightness until it restarted
  • Fix: answering Calibration's lock screen test crashed the app when the screen had rotated during the test

6.12 (17.10.2026)

  • App translation (drawer menu, below the Debug screen) translates the app into any language or improves an existing translation: it lists the texts with notes for translators, checks that placeholders are kept, previews the translation in the app, and exports it as Android strings.xml, XLIFF 1.2, XLIFF 2.2 or Gettext PO to send to the developer; it imports these formats and XLIFF 2.0 and 2.1 as well. The drawer menu has a divider above the Debug screen
  • Shorter, clearer texts in several dialogs, settings and calibration steps; calibration steps name the camera they are for
  • The app remembers the active profile - the one last applied or saved. Its button on the main screen is marked, and while the curve or saved settings differ from it the button shows a pencil and its long-press menu offers to save or revert the changes; tapping a profile button then asks before discarding them. The widget, the VAB profile tile and the notification show the active profile and whether it has changed
  • Each profile chooses what it saves: the brightness curve, settings such as sensors, sensitivity, extra brightness, overrides and the Superdim threshold, or both. Long-press a profile and choose What this profile saves to pick them; a new profile saves the curve only. What you pick there is a change to the profile, shown with the pencil on its button until you save or revert it from the long-press menu. Applying a profile from its button, the widget, the tile or Tasker sets its settings too
  • Quick settings tiles: one switches automatic brightness on or off - the system brightness slider in the same panel then sets the brightness - and one, part of the Tasker/widget add-on like the widget's Profile button, picks a saved profile and shows the active one
  • Fix: the widget's on/off button kept its old label when automatic brightness was switched in the app, from the notification or from Tasker
  • The In-app store is redesigned: items are cards that show their price or a Purchased mark, a description of the selected item, a centered buy button that looks like the profile buttons on the main screen, a Try again button when Google Play doesn't answer, and a list of purchased items that updates right after a purchase. It lists what the Tasker/widget add-on unlocks, links each item's description to the manual, and asks before a Developer support donation while the add-on isn't bought, since the donation unlocks nothing
  • Fix: without the Tasker/widget add-on, the widget's Profile button and graph and editing a Tasker action or condition opened an empty white screen; they now open the In-app store
  • Fix: without a data connection, for example after a restart, a bought Tasker/widget add-on or Project supporter counted as not bought; they now stay unlocked. Project supporter also unlocks the add-on's features in Settings, the widget and Tasker actions, where it counted as not having the add-on
  • The notification has a pin button next to the sun icon: it keeps the screen at its current brightness instead of following the light sensor until tapped again or until automatic brightness is switched off or on. While pinned, a brightness picked in the notification or with the system brightness slider changes the pinned brightness and leaves the brightness curve as it is
  • Notification settings (Settings → Service activation) opens Android's settings for the notification, where it can be hidden or silenced while the service keeps running
  • The system brightness slider sets brightness the way the notification's bar does, where the system lets the slider change brightness while Velis Auto Brightness controls it
  • Fix: a brightness picked in the notification ended up brighter on screen while additional brightness (when charging or permanent) was on; the screen now shows the picked brightness, and the curve gets it less the additional brightness. The notification's bar shows the brightness including it
  • Additional brightness when interacting (Settings → Additional brightness) raises brightness from a screen touch until Interaction duration seconds after the last one, by Interaction additional percent; like steady screen, it needs an overlay brightness update method or Superdim
  • While additional brightness (when charging, permanent or when interacting) is on, the main screen's graph shows the curve with it as a dashed line, and the crosshair marks the brightness on that line
  • Settings that don't apply are disabled with the reason shown instead of hidden: Ambient light source and lux sensor access method with a single choice, Update system brightness, Superdim threshold, and Screen touch - steady screen and Steady screen update brightness while nothing detects screen touches (System brightness setting or Display manager with Superdim off). A profile can save Superdim threshold also where Superdim isn't available yet
  • When a settings change disables or enables other settings, a dialog lists them and marks the disabled ones that were on
  • Choosing a camera in Settings asks for the camera permission right away, and the reminder to turn on the accessibility service says that a camera can't measure light in the background without it
  • Fix: with a high Brightness change sensitivity, brightness could stay below the top of the curve in sunlight, because the light sensor's reading couldn't rise far enough above the last one; a reading at the sensor's maximum (or at the highest calibrated value of a camera) now always changes brightness
  • The main screen reminds you when Superdim is set but doesn't dim because neither overlay type has been tested in Calibration - for example after upgrading from an older version or to a newer Android - and when the lock screen isn't dimmed because its own Superdim test hasn't run; the reminder opens Calibration's Superdim section
  • The manual and the changelog have a search field: it highlights every occurrence of the searched text and scrolls to the current one, and the arrows next to it move to the previous or the next one
  • Back returns to the screen a link was opened from - from the manual to the In-app store or Calibration, from Calibration to Settings, the main screen or wherever a reminder opened it - instead of to the main screen; Calibration opened on one of its steps goes back there directly, not through its overview
  • Fix: restoring a backup or moving to a new phone brought over the old phone's calibration, tested brightness update methods and Superdim limits; on the new phone these are now redone together with the brightness update method, Update system brightness and lock screen choices, the setup wizard runs again and automatic brightness starts off, while the brightness curve, profiles and other choices are kept

6.11 (9.10.2026)

  • Fix: while the screen saver (for example the clock shown while charging) was on, brightness stayed at whatever it was when the screen saver started instead of following the light sensor - in a dark room that could mean a very bright clock all night
  • "Optional update system brightness" is now "Update system brightness", and its description explains what it prevents: with an overlay update method, Android briefly shows the system brightness setting while the screen rotates, so without it the screen can flash to a stale brightness
  • Fix: "Update system brightness" was off after upgrading to 6.x even when it had been on before, so the brightness slider in the notification shade no longer followed Velis Auto Brightness; the earlier choice is now restored
  • Fix: after the service had been running for a while (typically a day or two), the notification stopped changing altogether - neither the brightness bar nor the values followed Velis Auto Brightness or a tap on the bar, though the tap itself still changed the brightness
  • Fix: the notification could keep showing an old brightness or old sensor values when they changed shortly after its last update and then stayed the same - it now always catches up, within half a second for the brightness bar and within five seconds for the sensor values
  • Fix: the home-screen widget's brightness graph stayed empty, or stood still, instead of showing the recent brightness history; it now also keeps the graph when you tap on/off, and a changed graph time period applies right away
  • Fix: a brightness picked in the notification could be dropped again within minutes without being confirmed or cancelled - whenever any setting was saved, for example the widget graph's history
  • The manual shows the drawer menu, the notification and the widget, and explains each of their controls
  • The diagnostic log also records the screen state (on, screen saver, always-on display, locked) and the brightness actually applied, and no longer adds rows while the screen is off
  • Excluded apps has a search field: type part of an app's name or package name to find it in the list
  • The main screen also reminds you of missing notification, system settings, display over other apps and usage access permissions, each only while the current settings need it
  • Fix: after the unlocked Superdim test, the app could come back on its main screen instead of the calibration screen with the test's result
  • The notification permission is no longer requested every time the app opens: it is asked for once after the setup wizard, and afterwards from the reminder at the bottom of the main screen
  • The main screen no longer opens permission explanations or requests on its own - for displaying over other apps, modifying system settings, usage access or the camera - and only points them out in the bar at its bottom; the setup wizard asks for each one right after the page whose choice needs it. The bar also reminds you of a missing camera permission while a camera is in use
  • Fix: after the setup wizard, a permission explanation left open behind it could reappear showing the wizard's last page instead of its own text
  • Fix: the app could crash when the service started without the app having been opened (for example right after the device booted), when a store purchase check finished after leaving the settings screen, or when the service connected before the main screen was fully set up; and it could stop responding while looking up the app in the foreground for Excluded apps
  • Fix: "Disable system handler" showed off while Velis Auto Brightness was on, although the system's automatic brightness is always off then; it now shows on
  • Fix: the first visit to the settings screen showed the "Interactive notification" notice and switched the service keep-alive interval on, even with the notification left on; both now happen only when the notification is switched off
  • The main screen reminds you when no brightness update method has been confirmed yet in Calibration, separately for the unlocked and the lock screen, until one is confirmed or all of them have been tested
  • Fix: with the light theme, Calibration's titles, section headings and method cards kept the dark theme's colors and were hard to read; colors named in layouts now follow the picked theme everywhere
  • Theme has a third choice besides light and dark: Same as the system, which follows the system's dark theme setting and is the default for anyone who hasn't picked a theme

6.10 (2.10.2026)

  • Superdim is available again on Android 11 and newer, once new calibration tests have measured how far the screen can be dimmed while taps still get through - unlocked for both overlay types, and on the lock screen for the accessibility overlay
  • Superdim works with every brightness update method: with System brightness setting or Display manager it dims through an overlay of its own
  • Superdim also dims the status and navigation bars, and never dims the screen by more than 99 %
  • Switching Superdim on or raising its threshold asks whether to keep the change, and goes back to the previous setting if you don't confirm within 10 seconds
  • Superdim threshold moved to Settings → Service activation
  • New "Send diagnostic log" (Settings → Advanced): emails a record of recent sensor readings and brightness calculations, to help track down brightness problems
  • "Erratic sensor readings fix" now replaces light readings that keep swinging up and down - such as an under-display sensor picking up a flickering fluorescent lamp - with their average
  • Proximity sensor and steady screen hold brightness at the light level from just before the sensor got shaded, and move smoothly to the current reading once released; the manual explains both
  • Brightness keeps being applied through a plain overlay right away when the Accessibility permission is turned off, instead of stopping until the screen next turns on
  • Phones whose system brightness goes above the usual 255 (some use up to 4095) are noticed on their own: until the exact maximum is measured on the calibration screen, nothing writes the system brightness setting and the options that would are hidden, so the screen can't end up far too dark - the main screen and the setup wizard lead to the measurement
  • The system's own automatic brightness is always off while Velis Auto Brightness is on, however it was turned on (also from the widget, the notification or Tasker); "Disable system handler" only chooses what happens while it's off
  • If no brightness update method was chosen, the setup wizard now picks Accessibility overlay when the Accessibility permission is on, otherwise Overlay window
  • Disabled settings are shown greyed out
  • Dragging a point on the graph moves the points around it again, smoothly and live while you drag - "Graph editing smoothing" (Settings → Graph settings, 30 % by default) sets how far
  • New "Smoothing helper points" (on by default): during an adjustment, temporary points across the graph let the curve bend smoothly even where it had few points; afterwards only the ones the curve needs are kept
  • Removed the "Track light in graph" switch: the graph always shows the current reading's crosshair now
  • Fix: every time the screen turned on, another brightness overlay was added and the old ones stayed behind with their old brightness - rotating the screen or opening an app could briefly flash it to one of those, even with "Optional update system brightness" on
  • Fix: with "Notification adjustment smoothing" at 0, confirming an adjustment from the notification still raised the other points slightly, and the setting only took effect after another setting was changed
  • Fix: finishing the setup wizard could switch off every switch in Settings, and merely paging through the wizard changed the brightness preset and sensitivity

6.01 (16.9.2026)

  • Fix: the brightness graph didn't redraw after confirming a point from the notification until something else (e.g. reopening the app) forced a refresh

6.00 (16.9.2026) App revival

  • New sensor calibration screen to bring the cameras and the light sensor onto a comparable brightness scale
  • Optional glare detection: a second camera compensates when direct light hits the back side of the phone
  • Optional continuous camera capture mode to remove the back camera's shutter click, at the cost of extra battery use (and permanently locked camera)
  • Choose which sensor drives brightness when more than one is enabled
  • New debug screen showing every stage of the brightness calculation, from raw sensor readings to the final value
  • Redesigned graph editing: drag a point to move it, press and hold then drag to add a new one, press and hold and let go to remove one - every change applies immediately, with an Undo option instead of a confirm step
  • New "Optimise curve points" button to simplify an overly dense brightness curve automatically
  • The brightness curve is now a smooth curve through its points instead of straight lines between them
  • Various fixes: switch labels disappearing on the main screen, the back button exiting the app instead of stepping back, dialog readability, and the setup wizard's graph instructions
  • In-app manual and changelog, replacing the outdated web page links
  • New "holo-like" switch look: a glossy, parallelogram thumb sliding in a recessed track, replacing the old flat pill
  • The brightness graph shows a live reticle for the current sensor reading and the brightness it produces, when "Track light in graph" is on
  • New "Light sensor update speed" setting (Normal/UI/Game/Fastest), for devices where the default rate reads too slowly
  • "Graph editing sensitivity" is renamed to "Notification adjustment smoothing" - it only ever affects adjusting brightness from the notification now; "Graph abort timeout" is renamed to "Graph undo timeout" to match what it actually controls
  • Fix for "Optimise curve points" staying hidden behind Undo for the rest of the session after a single edit, when "Graph undo timeout" is set to 0
  • Removed the Settings screen's web links to the blog and changelog - the changelog and manual are both in-app now
  • Various layout fixes: main screen button alignment and spacing, a subtle gradient on the profile buttons
  • New "Brightness update method" choice: overlay window, accessibility overlay, system brightness setting, or the platform's Display manager API - not every method works on every device, so pick whichever one actually changes your screen
  • New "Lock screen brightness" setting: choose what happens to brightness while the device is locked - same as normal mode, hand off to the system's own automatic brightness, keep updating through a specific method, or a fixed value
  • Sensor calibration now opens on a hub with three separate things to calibrate or verify: the cameras/light sensor (as before), the system brightness setting's actual maximum value, and which brightness update methods work on this device

Initial setup wizard

  • The wizard is far more reliable now: it no longer breaks if the device rotates mid-wizard, and no longer silently vanishes or restarts from scratch if it's interrupted (e.g. by backgrounding the app to grant a permission it asks for) - it resumes on whichever page it was on instead
  • Choose the brightness update method directly in the wizard now, instead of just being told which one was picked for you
  • New wizard page to choose which sensor drives brightness, shown when more than one is available
  • The wizard's yes/no pages (auto brightness on/off, charging boost, steady screen) default to whatever's already configured when you re-run it, instead of always guessing as if this were a first run
  • "Run settings wizard" (Settings) always starts from the first page again
  • Removed a manual link on the wizard's last page that didn't actually do anything - the manual is one tap away in the main menu regardless

Brightness backend reliability

  • Each brightness update method is now tracked as confirmed, untested, or disconfirmed (not just "not known broken") - Settings shows a warning when the one currently in use has never actually been confirmed
  • Display manager: choose Raw or Percentage explicitly, each tested and confirmed independently; the app also self-checks its own writes and can disconfirm itself if the display doesn't actually follow them, since this is the one method whose failure a human eye can miss
  • A brightness update method change now takes effect immediately, without needing a restart
  • Accessibility overlay quietly degrades to a plain overlay window if accessibility gets turned off, and upgrades back once it's granted again
  • A brightness backend test on the calibration screen pauses the live service's own backend for the duration, so the two don't fight over the screen
  • An overlay-based method now leaves the system's own brightness setting at a sensible value when it steps back (excluded app, screen off, automatic brightness turned off), instead of leaving it stale
  • A method the calibration screen finds isn't working is dropped automatically, falling back to another usable one
  • Warning shown before testing Accessibility overlay while accessibility itself is off, since that test can't succeed
  • The "sync system brightness setting" switch is hidden when it would have no effect (the update method is already System brightness setting)
  • Fix a crash when an overlay-based method's window never actually attached to the screen
  • Manual documents the confirm/reconfirm behavior and Display manager's Raw/Percentage caveat

Lock screen brightness

  • Lock screen brightness methods can now be tested directly on the calibration screen, the same way normal-mode methods are
  • The lock screen picker only offers methods that have actually been confirmed there

Sensor calibration

  • Moved right after Settings in the drawer menu
  • System brightness maximum value calibration now pauses VAB and the system's own auto-brightness while it's on screen, so neither fights the value you're trying to read
  • Calibration hub tiles are now square and responsive to screen size
  • Redesigned the brightness update method calibration cards

Keep-alive and background reliability

  • New "Efforts to keep the service alive" manual section, covering the notification, the Accessibility permission, the keep-alive interval, and the various restart triggers together in one place
  • Fix: the interactive-notification warning no longer reappears every time you visit Settings - it now shows exactly once
  • Fix: the app no longer crashes if restarting the service in the background is refused by Android (most notably right after boot)
  • Fix: the broadcast action for "the device was just unlocked" was misspelled in the app's manifest and never actually received

Visual polish

  • Main screen buttons no longer glare against a bright dark-theme accent colour
  • Light theme fixes: the switch track background, dialog button text, and app bar colour were all stuck at values meant for dark theme
  • The profile buttons' radial gradient actually renders now, correctly centred and visible in both themes
  • Fixed illegible button text app-wide, not just in dialogs
  • Dark theme's dialog title band now matches the app bar's colour
  • Both theme colour pickers show side by side in landscape
  • "Optimise curve points" and "Undo" sit side by side now
